Free macOS app
Shade_
A menu-bar colour and dim overlay for macOS. It can warm every display, leave chosen app windows clear, and act as a coloured reading tint for on-screen legibility.
Shipping engine
Click-through overlay. No Screen Recording permission. Passthrough windows stay visually clear while the rest of the screen is tinted.
Try the tint
This demo is contained inside the window. The real app covers connected displays, but the composition is the same: a source-over colour layer plus a dim layer.
Reading panel
A reading tint is a coloured overlay that can make dense on-screen text more comfortable for some dyslexic readers and anyone who benefits from a tinted page.
Move the controls and watch only this panel change. The page outside the demo stays untouched.
Overlay controls
Passthrough
Keep colour-critical apps clear while the rest of the screen warms. Night Shift cannot leave your grading window alone.
Reading tint
Use any hue as an Irlen-style reading tint for on-screen legibility. It is visual comfort, not text-to-speech.
Schedule
Warm and dim on a local-time schedule, cross midnight, and launch at login from the menu-bar app.
Honesty note
Overlay Fallback is the shipping engine. It draws a click-through overlay above your displays. The colour tint adds light; the dim layer is a translucent dark layer. Neither reads nor edits the pixels underneath.
Reading Transform is a separate experimental engine. It is dev-gated because public display capture plus a fullscreen output window can recurse. This page names it, but it is not offered as a public feature.
